Male and female plumage similar. Gray head, white throat, and a rich Rufous color on belly, wings, back, and tail. Long, slightly curved bill for probing in rock crevices.

Canyon Wrens are found specifically in areas with an abundance of granite boulders. Outcroppings of boulders in the Prescott area occur randomly in both Pinyon/Juniper and Ponderosa Pine habitats. The entire life-cycle of Canyon Wrens revolves around their dependence upon rocky, cliff habitat. They build their nest in rock crevices, and forage for insects in rocky outcroppings.
